Why sledding beats hockey, politics, pro wrestling, 9 to 5 and reality

snowmobileWhy sledding beats Hockey
First of all, it takes three hours to get dressed for a game of hockey. Pads here, cup there, strap the skates on your feet and tape the stick and so on. A day in the mountains takes about four minutes to prepare (assuming that you are already there of course…) Put your helmet on, get your pants (put them on later) and you’re off! Plus, it’s cooler to say you got that broken pelvis

When men were men

Larven

Each time, era, and place has it its own rituals for becoming a man. In my little village, the tradition started in the early 60’s when a few youngsters challenged each other to jump the biggest cliff around with their parents Skidoo’s, Evinrude’s,  and Polaris’s. Every year it all took place when the first snow arrived on the 30th of October. The boys, not yet men, gathered together in the full moonlight to wait for the village’s elderly man to give the signal. When the moon’s first beams broke through the clouds and the shadows showed them the way, he would wave a clutch belt in the air so that the humming sound called for their attention.

Life as a snowmobile reporter

beerBEING JOE DIRT

So being a snowmobile reporter and traveling the world in 1st class is a dream of yours? Do you honestly think I always get to hang out with cool people and see the places others just dream of? I bet you even think I'm getting laid every night and get free crap from companies that want me to write nice things about them.

Well, your gosh-dang right! My life rocks and I wouldn’t trade with YOU for all the two-stroke oil in the world. In fact, I wouldn’t trade you even if you offered Jenna Jameson and a Hemi covered in whipped cream with red cherries waiting for me at a NASCAR race, which would of course  be included together with Neverland, Bubbles the monkey, and season tickets to the Def Leopard reunion tour.

Sage Francis

Sage FrancisKidnapped, eaten and spit out by multinational media companies, hip-hop is not what it used to be.

Today, the standard money-hungry rappers who sing female-degrading texts to ready-made beats top the charts. Meanwhile the underground movement has become stronger. As a reaction against mainstream hip-hop, a new generation of American rappers who are strongly critical of the society they have grown up in are suspected to exist.

Millencolin - The Swedish punk-rock export

millencolin1I was about to have a chat with Larzon and Mathias from the Swedish punk-rock export Millencolin in their hometown of Örebro, just west of Stockholm. I arrived in a Volvo. They arrived in a god damn 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 and as one might expect, guitarist Mathias is very proud of his car since American Muscle is hard to come by in Sweden. After every stop he makes, he gives it a little extra gas and leaves big black rubber markings on the ground. The roar from the engine even makes me, the mighty Car Incompetence Man, crack a smile. Given my complete lack of car knowledge, I ask him what the top speed might be...?
